Description

UCLA Staff Assembly is hosting the 8th Annual Emerging Research Speaker Series in the Main Conference Room in Young Research Library. The speaker series is a collaboration between Campus Human Resources, Academic Senate, and Staff Assembly and is an opportunity for faculty and staff to interact and form relationships

Our guest speaker is Professor Pedro Noguera and he will be presenting on the topic of Racial Inequality, Education and the Future of American Democracy.

Several commentators have described the effort to close the racial achievement gap in education as the civil rights issue of the 21st century. However, most of those who have made this pronouncement have never spelled out what this actually means or what it should entail. At a time when all forms of inequality in American society are increasing is it reasonable to expect that schools can play a role in creating a more equitable society? This presentation will examine the role federal education policies have played in the effort to use education as a means to promote social equality. It will also explore the kind of educational policies and practices that could help in reducing racial inequality in American society.

Professor Noguera is a Distinguished Professor of Education in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies at UCLA. His research focuses on the ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions, as well as by demographic trends in local, regional and global contexts. He is the author of eleven books and over 200 articles and monographs. He serves on the boards of numerous national and local organizations and appears as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio, and other national news outlets.

A reception with refreshments and hor d'oeuvres will be served afterwards.
